I've read every single book by this author and loved all of them. All the plots are original and the characters complex. This book just wasn't my favorite. I really didn't like Dakota. She was the most narcissistic character I've ever read. All she did was have inner monologues about herself and wonder what people thought of her. She was immature, petty, mean, obnoxious, and just an all around jerk. I have no idea what the guys even saw in her quite frankly. The most interesting thing about her was the kidnapping story but that just gave her more of an excuse to act like a schmuck. The "bullying" was a lot of below the belt insults that I don't think your average person could forgive. Every barb of words felt unnecessarily cruel. Instead of it being a sexy battle of the minds it felt more like verbal diarrhea of the hormonal teenagers. Also, there was a huge emphasis placed on how people smelled in the book. It started to weird me out a bit. There were a ton of details about how angry, irritated, turned on, turned off, tired, hungry, and pretty much every emotion under the sun Dakota was feeling at the time. Pages and pages of going down to eat breakfast, driving somewhere, walking down the halls, stolen glances, and random daily living activities. It didn't really progress the plot in anyway or help me get to know the characters better. Other than the whole I'm an angsty and hormonal teen who likes to play video games I just identified these people as spoiled brats. The younger siblings get lost in the story and all the emphasis placed on Lumen and other rando characters didn't make a whole lot of sense to me. I read a lot of back and forth with Dakota and Danyella but didn't see the point of it. The dialogue between her, Parrish, and Chasm would have been more interesting to me. Not just the let me tell you all the ways I think you're inadequate in every way conversations. I wanted more in depth and heart felt conversations between them. Her and her mom trying to find common ground could have been another book altogether. It was like watching As The World Turns sometimes. So much drama but no progress. How can there be so many words but nothing happening? When Parrish gets kidnapped there was a part where I felt that Chasm had to beg Dakota to help Parrish. She agreed, then acted like she was saint Dakota and would do anything for him. It was really odd to me. Why did that even have to be asked? Given the nature of their relationship she should have jumped at the chance to help without any prompting from Chas. It irritated me. Don't get me started on the kidnapper and the tasks he has her do. It felt like I was going on a misdemeanor charged scavenger hunt that wouldn't result in anything but boring me into a stupor. The characters were young...16 and 17 years old. I think my dislike of this book might have something to do with the selfishness and maturity level of the characters. They all had the emotional depth of a Dixie cup. I enjoyed the stepbrother trope and really like that Dakota is bi and unapologetic. That seems to be her only redeeming quality quite frankly. In the next book, I hope the characters get to grow up a bit and have more meaningful interactions. Acting like a 12 year old isn't a good look.I liked the interaction between her and her sister, Maxine a lot. That seemed to be the most genuine and natural relationship she had with anyone in the story. I really hated how she got butterflies looking at her sister's boyfriend and acted like a love struck puppy around him. I have sisters and would NEVER do anything like that. In fact, thinking about a guy my sister's are in love with in anyway that is inappropriate makes me want to dry heave. If she was 12 years old fine but, she is old enough to just be skeezy about the whole scenario for me. It was just another of the many reasons I did not like Dakota. In conclusion, this was not my favorite book. It just isn't what I'm used to from this author. Given how many books she's written and this is the only one out of all of them I don't like is a very impressive track record. C.M Stunich is an excellent writer and the queen of RH stories. Once the second book comes out I may feel like I was too harsh with this one if their is more character growth and plot development. I'll just have to wait and see.
