Susanna Wesley (1669-1742) was always in my mind as being an ideal mother who home-schooled her many children and taught them godly behavior. Lo and behold I read the opposite. Her husband, Samuel was neglectful of his family, and would accrue debts which could hardly ever be paid. In addition, he and his wife were at odds in their Christian beliefs. When the house burned the first time, it was thankfully only part of the house and all but one of the children escaped alive. Samuel came back to them after being gone for a year. The second time, the entire house burned down and the children had to live with various families until a new one would be built. When they were finally rejoined, she discovered that some of the children had deviated from the straight and narrow and she endeavored to get them back on the right path. Eric writes about the demons which had invaded their house and were affecting everyone very diversely for three months, until they finally departed. I’m thankful that Charles and John turned out all right since others had unhappy marriages and some also died quite young. I appreciated Susanna’s writings since she wrote negative things as well as positive. In one sense life is a battle especially for our young vulnerable children and in this century more than ever. This is the importance of reading our Bibles daily and being in settings in which they get the proper teaching in order to be like “Daniel” (the one who stood alone!) who kept the faith despite all odds. I don’t wish to minimize the ministry of John Wesley. His preaching reached thousands around England and he was a mover of social reform, including the abolition of slavery and prison reform. People were not only saved in his meetings; there was follow-up, creating true disciples of Jesus Christ.
