Another former Crew Chief weighing in....F-4s. Terrific book. Author enlists in the USAF because Army draft is imminent: a very common story. He's a lottery winner in his job assignment to C-130s; it comes with see the world travel and flight pay. If my memory serves, flight pay doubled junior enlisted pay. The author owns a custom Corvette when he joins, gets married, and buys another car for his wife and their apartment. We had no money for plane tickets home or a family. Maybe flight pay was even better than I remember. After seeing the US and Europe he is sent to late conflict Vietnam where the USAF is stretched to the limit. Again he gets lucky and moves to the AC-130 program (new version of Spooky). Endless work hours, friends come and go, some friends do not return. Excellent insight given on the Crew Chief position. Lots of detail about a major repair project including replacing a wing and all the internal systems over a period of months and mostly working alone. Very unusual circumstances for a kid Crew Chief with just 2 years’ experience. Fast return to service requirements usually means AP licensed contractors, and many of them. The author acknowledges but downplays discipline, alcohol and drug issues on the flight line. I would like to have heard more about what went on around him. The book is an accurate description of the work and the late Vietnam USAF experience. This may be the best Crew Chief memoir I've read. I would also highly recommend the William Barron book, but I have a soft spot for Thuds. Nice effort. Well worth your reading time.
